Fitzsimmons was named to the Mo-Kan Bowl in his senior year. He scored a touchdown on a four-lateral play against Maryville in 1948. He flew seaplane bombers out of Burmuda for the Navy after graduation. He was a real estate salesman prior to entering the seminary in 1956. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1961 and ordained as a Bishop in 1975.
