Box Score Rockhurst posted 11 runs and 15 hits, but fell short in its first game in a six-game Florida spring break trip. Mansfield pushed across a run in the top of the 11th inning to edge the Hawks 12-11 Thursday at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater.
The Hawks jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the fifth inning and took an 11-10 lead into the ninth inning. Mansfield tied forced extra innings with a one-out RBI single in the ninth.
Rockhurst scored four runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and added three more runs in the seventh. Mansfield rallied to score six runs in the seventh off three Hawk hurlers.
Mitch Stickney led the Hawks with four hits and three RBIs. The junior right fielder hit a three-run home run to left field in the fourth inning to put Rockhurst in front 3-1.
Brett Marr and
Wylson Lamb each tallied three hits.
Tim Mahoney added two hits and
Henry Weiler drove in two runs.
Alex Merithew (2-1) took the loss after entering the game in the eighth inning.
Grant Otte pitched the first 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits.
The Hawks (4-5) next face Upper Iowa on Friday in Clearwater.
