Laudando named GLVC Freshman of the Year

Michael Laudando posted 100 strikeouts in his freshman year.
Michael Laudando received Freshman of the Year honors from the Great Lakes Valley Conference, conference officials announced on Thursday (May 12).

Laudando also collected first team All-GLVC honors at the utility position and second team All-GLVC pitching honors.

The Westchester, Illinois product went 7-5 in 13 games in his first season at Rockhurst. He registered the second-most strikeouts (100) in the GLVC in a league-high 82.2 innings of work. Laudando threw his first-career complete game shutout back in late February in the Hawks' win over Upper Iowa and finished with nine complete games.

Offensively, Laudando batted .361 with 22 RBIs and 21 runs scored while playing third base and second base. He collected 56 total bases with a .459 slugging percentage.

Laudando is the first Rockhurst player to win the league's Freshman of the Year honor since Brandon Tangney in 2010.

Senior outfielder Tommy Kraus was also recognized as the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award winner for Rockhurst. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners.
