Cross country teams return to a normal schedule in 2021

The Rockhurst men's and women's cross country teams will return to a normal schedule in 2021 after being limited to three meets in 2020 due to the Covid epidemic.

The Hawks open the 2021 season on Saturday at the ZK Maple Leaf Invitational in Baldwin City, Kansas. The women will run a 4K race at 9 a.m., followed by the men running a 5K race at 9:30 a.m.

Head coach Kathy Strecker greets 35 runners (20 women and 15 men), including 17 freshmen, heading into their first competition of the season.

"All 35 runners are off to a great start. They are working hard every morning. The freshmen are stepping up every day," Strecker said.

The top returners on the men's team are senior Zach Hill, and sophomores Jack Del Vecchio and Tyler Pedee.

Hill posted two top 10 finishes last year and ran a team-best 28:27 8K at the Great Lakes Valley Conference meet. Del Vecchio finished 13th at the GLVC meet (28:43) and Pedee placed 16th at the GLVC race (29:00).

The women's team will be led by seniors Maggie Moyer and Brooke Fredrickson, and junior Lauren DeWitt. All three finished in the top 20 at the GLVC 6K race last year.

Moyer finished third at the GLVC meet in 23:50, while Fredrickson came in seventh in 25:07 and DeWitt placed 19th in 26:05.

Both teams will run five meets prior to the GLVC Championships on Oct. 23 in Romeoville. Illinois. The NCAA Midwest Regional is scheduled for Nov. 6 in Evansville, Indiana.
