Softball opens season this weekend

Maya Gallagher has a career .311 batting average
The Rockhurst softball team opens the 2024 season this weekend in the Five-State Classic in Emporia, Kansas under first-year head coach Dana Goss.

Goss says the team has made huge strides since fall practice and she is excited to see who emerges in the spring.

"I would like to see us be more of an up-tempo team. We have three returning pitchers and an experienced infield," said Goss, who coached the past four years at Baker University.

The Hawks return 12 players from a 21-26 team that finished seventh in the GLVC with a 13-10 league record and added three newcomers to the roster.

Senior shortstop Maya Gallagher is the top returner. Gallagher sports a career .311 batting average with 32 home runs and 106 RBIs.

The rest of the infield will feature Riley McGovern and Jayla Pierce at first base, Kerstyn Finch and Emily Berry at second base, and Lauren Good at third base. Finch was the Newcomer of the Year in the Heart of America Conference while playing at Baker last year.

Cheyenne Minnick returns as the starter behind the plate and will be backed up by Emilee Farnan.

Avery Huffman leads the pitching staff after posting a 6-6 record and 3.11 ERA over 81 strikeouts in 87.2 innings as a freshman. Anna Newcomer and Anna Stephen combined to throw over 100 innings last year.

When Huffman is not pitching, she will be a starter in the outfield. Finch and Berry will see time in the outfield along with Lilly Spring, Emma Vodnansky, Morgan Schmidt and Katherine Maggard.

The Hawks meet the University of Mary in their season opener Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and will play Sioux Falls at 4:45 p.m. On Sunday, Rockhurst faces Mary at 12:15 p.m. and plays Wayne State College at 2:15 p.m.
