Cross Country teams open season at Baker meet

Jack Del Vecchio finished 12th last year at the Baker meet.

The Rockhurst men's and women's cross country teams open the 2022 season on Saturday at the ZK Maple Leaf Invitational in Baldwin City, Kansas. The women will run a 4K race at 9 a.m., followed by the men running a 5K race at 9:30 a.m. hosted by Baker University at the Baldwin City Country Club.

Head coach Kathy Strecker greets 35 runners (20 women and 15 men), including 17 freshmen, heading into their first competition of the season.

"Both teams are aiming for big improvements as they progress throughout the season. We have a great team culture," Strecker said.

The top returner on the men's team is junior Jack Del Vecchio. Freshmen Dylan Brush and Collin Fay are running well in preseason practice.

Del Vecchio posted three top 12 finishes last year and finished 79th at the GLVC meet.

The women's team will be led by seniors Lauren DeWitt and Cassie Coltvet, and sophomores Sage Holmes and Cara Super. Sophomore Mary O'Connor is a strong addition to the team after running at Benedictine College last year.

DeWitt and Super both had a pair of top 10 finishes last year. Holmes finished in the top 20 in three races in 2021.

Both teams will run five meets prior to the GLVC Championships on Nov. 5 in Elsah, Illinois. The NCAA Midwest Regional is scheduled for Nov. 19 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
