Gunelson named new head softball coach

Tyler Gunelson won 107 games in five seasons at Barton Community College.
Rockhurst University Director of Athletics Kristy Bayer has announced the hiring of Tyler Gunelson as the school's new head softball coach on Wednesday, August 24.

Gunelson has compiled a 107-100 record in five seasons as the head softball coach at Barton Community College in Great Bend, Kansas.

"We are excited about having someone with Tyler's experience here at Rockhurst," Bayer said. "Tyler has extensive recruiting knowledge and has great relationships coaches with across this region. There is no doubt he will continue to bring top notch student-athletes to Rockhurst.

In 2022, Barton posted a 25-22 record and finished fourth in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College West Division with 18 conference wins. The Cougars had four all-conference players and 14 NJCAA All-Academic awards.

Gunelson guided Barton to the KJCC Region VI Tournament runner-up finish in 2019 and 2021. He was named the Region VI Coach of the Year in 2019 after leading the Cougars to a 33-17 record and earning points in the national junior-college poll.

"Tyler has a passion for softball," Bayer added. "He is dedicated to coaching, training and being around all aspects of the game of softball. We are looking forward to having him engaged and active with our team. He is committed to helping our program continue to excel on and off the field."

Gunelson served as the head baseball coach at Brown Mackie College from 2012 to 2016 and was the assistant baseball coach at Friends University in 2010-12. He earned his bachelor's degree in Marketing and Management from Newman University and master's degree in health, physical education and recreation from Emporia State.
