Hawks will not be short of experience heading into 2022 season

Emily Clark hit eight home runs and drove in 26 runs last year.
The Rockhurst softball program begins its 18th season with a new coach in 2022.  Head coach Heidi Jordan inherits nine players who started at least 13 games last year.

"Our experience and leadership will be our strengths," said Jordan, who coached the past 17 years at Highland (Kan.) Community College. "I'm pretty excited about our offense. We will be strong defensively, especially in the outfield."

Junior Allison Shakiba leads the outfield returnees after hitting a team-high .356 and stealing eight bases last year. Jaden Santoni and Lilly Spring also return to the outfield and will be joined by newcomers Cheyenne Minnick, Kennedy Rucker and Emma Vodnansky.

The infield has four returning starters: senior first baseman Josie Lindemann, senior second baseman Shelby Winkelman, junior shortstop Maya Gallagher and junior third baseman Gwen Bostick. Senior Calli Wibbenmeyer will see playing time at first and third base.

Lindemann and Winkelman combined for nine home runs and 41 RBIs while both earned All-GLVC second team honors last year.

Emily Clark will be the starting catcher for the second year in row. The All-GLVC second teamer batted .326 with eight home runs and 26 RBIs last year. Clark will backed up by Minnick and Claire Reinhart.

Anna Newcomer is the top returning pitcher. She threw 35 innings in 15 games as a freshman last year. Rounding out the pitching staff will be a pair of freshmen, Anna Stephen and Bre Barchak, and junior Haley Gatica.

"We are very young in the circle. For a while it will be pitching by committee," added Jordan.

The Hawks, picked to finish 10th in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll, open the season today in the Music City Invitational in Smyrna, Tennessee.
