Hawks will feature power and pitching in 2021

Bailey Wittenauer enters her fourth season as the Rockhurst softball coach with her most talented team. The Hawks return seven players in the starting lineup and will have their deepest pitching staff in school history.

The Hawks, picked to finish eighth in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll, open the season today in the Washburn Invitational in Topeka, Kansas.

"Our main strengths are our offensive power and our pitching depth," Wittenauer said. "We have five pitchers and they will all pitch. We have kids coming off the bench who can come in and won't skip a beat. We have more speed than we've ever had and this is our most fundamentally sound defensive team."

Seniors Lexie Storrer, Olivia Prather and Paige Renner return in the circle. Storrer and Prather combined for 13 wins and 83 strikeouts in 115 innings last year. Sophomore transfer Haley Gatica and freshman Anna Newcomer give the Hawks two more strong arms.

The catching duties will be shared by sophomores Cassie Coltvet and Clare Reinhart. The infield has experience with the return of first baseman Calli Wibbenmeyer (.368), second baseman Shelby Winkelman, shortstop Maya Gallagher (.313, 2 HR, 17 RBI) and third baseman Emily Clark (.379, 3 HR, 19 RBI).

Sophomore Gwen Bostick will share time at third base with Clark. Josie Lindemann, Clark and Reinhart will split duties as the designated player in the lineup.

Lauren Marks (.431, 3 HR, 24 RBI), Dominique Salinas and Allison Shakiba are penciled in as the starting outfielders. Shakiba will be the leadoff hitter. Jaden Santoni, Lilly Spring and Haley Shin will provide outfield depth.
