Hawks fall to Newman men in spring opener

Nicolas Leon teamed with Simon Birgerson to win No. 2 doubles.

Box Score The Rockhurst men's tennis team opened the spring season with a 5-1 loss at Newman Saturday in Wichita, Kansas.

Newman captured a point in doubles with wins in No. 1 and 3 doubles. Rockhurst's Nicolas Leon and Simon Birgerson were winners in No. 2 doubles by a 7-6 score over Newman's Gustavo Gil and Arthur Esteves Justo. Leon and Birgerson won the match on a 7-5 tie-breaker.

Martijn Eleveld and Ermanno Galimberti fell in No. 1 doubles to Lauri Soome and Jarrod Nowak, 6-4. Santiago Rodriguez and Masao Perret lost to Newman's Teodor Antelj and Marcel Miasato in No. 3 doubles, 6-2.

Birgerson was a winner in No. 2 singles, defeating Gil in two sets (6-1, 6-3). Rodriguez was leading in No. 5 singles over Nowak (6-4, 6-7, 4-3) as the match was unfinished.

In No. 1 singles, Soome defeated RU's Perret in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-3). Justo swept Leon in No. 3 singles (6-3, 6-2). Antelj was a three-set winner over Galimberti (6-3, 6-7, 6-3) in No. 4 singles. Eleveld fell in two sets to Miasato (6-4, 6-4) in No. 6 singles.

The Hawks (1-1) will be back in action Feb. 22 against McKendree at Clayview Country Club.
