Griese, Tikhonova and Dickason Lead Hawks at Washburn Invitational

Rockhurst men's tennis posted a pair of runner-up finishes at the Washburn Invitational on Sept. 18-19 in Topeka, Kansas, highlighted by Tommy Griese in singles and the veteran doubles team of Alex Tikhonova and Oliver Dickason.

Griese advanced to the championship match of the Purple Flight, where he went the distance against Washburn's Petr Leipner. After dropping the opening set, Griese responded with a 7-5 win in the second before Leipner claimed the deciding tiebreak, 10-7, to take the match 6-4, 5-7, 10-7.

The Hawks also reached a championship match in doubles as Tikhonova and Dickason advanced to the Red Flight final. The Rockhurst duo battled Washburn's Kilian Martinez and Gael Mourmant in a tight final before falling 7-5.

Henry Redfern represented Rockhurst in the Blue Flight singles quarterfinals, facing Washburn's Yuto Miyagawa. Miyagawa earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Jannis Piliar also saw singles action for the Hawks, falling to Washburn's Graham Faris, 6-3, 6-3, in consolation play.

Griese and Redfern also teamed up in doubles consolation action, battling Miyagawa and Keita Kuroda before falling 6-4.

Rockhurst closed the two-day tournament with two flight runner-up finishes.
