Hawks split first two games in Nashville

Rockhurst rallied to defeat Davenport 8-7 Friday in Nashville.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 A five-run sixth inning powered Rockhurst to an 8-7 win over Davenport University in the Hawks' season opener Friday afternoon in the Music City Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee.

After falling behind 4-0, the Hawks cut the deficit to one with a three-run fifth inning. Katie Wood scored on a Megan Freitag single down the line to get the Hawks on the board. Freshman Calli Wibbenmeyer singled home two more, driving in Emily Truitt and Payton Staggs.

Davenport responded with three runs in the top of the sixth to go ahead 7-3, but the Hawks weren't done yet. Truitt drew a bases-loaded walk to score Wood, cutting the lead to 7-4. Hanna Stam then cleared the bases with a double down the line to even the score 7-7. Wibbenmeyer provided the eventual game-winning RBI, plating Stam on a single to right center.

Pitcher Shannon Greene shut the door on Davenport with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, forcing three straight ground-outs, as the Hawks escaped with a one-run victory.

Stam and Wibbenmeyer each went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Wood, Staggs and Truitt each scored twice. Freitag finished with two hits, one RBI and one run scored.

Rockhurst fell to Trevecca Nazarene 13-8 in its second game of the day. The Hawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but a four-run fourth and five-run fifth inning by Trevecca was too much to overcome.

Wood led the Hawks, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two home runs and six RBIs. Wood hit a three-run home run in the second and a two-run homer in the seventh. Wibbenmeyer and Lauren Marks each added two hits.

The Hawks are back in action on Saturday in Nashville, taking on Urbana (12:00 p.m.) and Tiffin (2:00 p.m.).
