Home runs power Hawks to 7-1 win over Lewis

Five Rockhurst seniors were honored after Game 1 on Sunday.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Payton Staggs and Lauren Cairo hit home runs to power Rockhurst to a 7-1 victory over Lewis in the second game of a Senior Day doubleheader Sunday at Loyola Park. The Flyers won the first game, 5-3.

The split leaves the Hawks with an 18-6 conference record and tied for first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with Southern Indiana with six games left in the regular season.

Staggs gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead with a two-run home run in the second inning. Cairo connected on a two-run homer in the fifth. Madison Wagner added a two-run single in the fifth.

Bridgette Sappington (21-5) allowed one run on six hits with two strikeouts. Staggs led the Hawks with three hits. Pyle collected two hits.

Lewis scored three runs in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie in Game One. Pyle and Lauren Marks led the Hawks with two hits apiece. Shannon Greene (7-12) allowed four runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings.

The Hawks (29-19) host Wisconsin-Parkside at noon on Monday.
