Sappington throws first perfect game in school history

Bridgette Sappington (20) pitched the first perfect game in school history.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Bridgette Sappington made history on Friday at Loyola Park. The senior right-hander pitched the first perfect game in school history, leading the Hawks to a 3-0 victory over Maryville in the second game of a conference doubleheader.

Sappington retired 21 batters in a row while striking out five in winning her 14th game of the season. She also came out of the bullpen to pitch a perfect eighth inning and collect the win in the Hawks' 5-4 come-from-behind victory in the first game.

The Hawks scored all of their runs in the second game in the first inning on a run-scoring single by Lexie Zuniga and a two-run home run to center field by Lauren Marks. Madison Wagner and Zuniga each had two hits to lead Rockhurst's seven-hit attack.

In the first game, Rockhurst rallied to score two runs on five consecutive hits in the seventh to force extra innings. Zuniga won the game with a walk-off single up the middle in the eighth.

Kelsey Tepen led the Hawks with three hits. She hit a solo home run in the fourth and singled home runs in the third and the seventh. Wagner had two hits with an RBI single. Zuniga and Megan Freitag also posted two hits.

The first-place Hawks (19-15, 8-2 GLVC) will host Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday (April 1).
