Hawks sweep Newman in home opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Hanna Stam hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Rockhurst a 2-1 victory over Newman in the first game of a doubleheader in the Hawks' home opener Tuesday at Loyola Park.

Megan Freitag and Madison Wagner singled in the seventh to set up Stam's game-winning hit. Lexie Zuniga gave Rockhurst a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the sixth. Zuniga and Wagner led the Hawks with two hits apiece. Bridgette Sappington (5-3) allowed one run on four hits in 7.0 innings.

The Hawks (7-7) completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory in the second game. Payton Staggs led Rockhurst with two hits and three RBIs. She singled home a run in the first and hit a two-run double in the fifth. Lauren Marks drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Kelsey Tepen stole home in the fifth. Shannon Greene (2-3) allowed two runs on four hits in 7.0 innings with six strikeouts.
