Box Score 2 Lauren Cairo hit a pinch-hit three-run home run in the second inning to lead Rockhurst to a 10-3 victory over Nebraska-Kearney on the second day of the 8-State Classic in Bentonville, Ark.
Cairo also doubled home two runs in the seventh to finish with two hits and five RBIs. Hannah Stam led the 13-hit attack with three hits and an RBI.
Halle Koelliker posted two hits and two RBIs.
Hannah Pyle and
Gabbie Boerema also had two hits.
Sappington (4-2) pitched the final four innings, allowing two runs on four hits with one strikeout.
Rockhurst opened the day with a 4-3 loss to Rogers State. The winning run was a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Hawks scored three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. Stam and
Payton Staggs each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Staggs doubled home a run, while Pyle added a two-run single. Sappington took the loss in relief of Staggs.
The Hawks (5-5) play Missouri Southern and Northwest Missouri State on Sunday on the final day of the 8-State Classic.
