Box Score In a game that totaled 28 hits by both teams, the Rockhurst Hawks fell short in their first action of the season to the 21st-ranked Washburn Ichabods 9-7 in Topeka, Kan. Washburn (9-0) got off to a fast start scoring three runs in the first three innings off starting pitcher
Michael Lydon-Lorson.
Rockhurst was able to plate one run in the fourth inning with a solo blast to dead center by redshirt junior
Blake Petersen. An inning later, the Hawks put up a three spot with another long ball by sophomore shortstop
Brett Marr, who knocked a three-run blast over the left-field wall. Marr's home run also gave Rockhurst a 4-3 lead.
Unfortunately the Hawks weren't able to keep the lead as Washburn's Riley Krane knocked an RBI triple to right center. The Ichabods were able to add one more run in the fifth. Krane had himself a day with a double, triple and home run. He was a single away from hitting for the cycle.
The Hawks were able to scrape one more run across the board after senior left fielder
Caleb Baker legged out a triple to right-center. Second baseman
Patrick Burns drove Baker in with a ground ball through the right side.
With the combination of the long ball, walks and hit-by-pitches, the Ichabods scored two runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Rockhurst was not able to keep up the pace scoring only one in the eighth and one in the ninth.
The Hawks threw three starting pitchers. After Lydon-Lorson, coach
Gary Burns gave the ball to sophomore
Joe Huber. He threw four innings, giving up four runs, three earned, and striking out five while receving the loss.
Burns,
David Stober and
Matt Stacks paced the Hawks with three hits apiece. Marr collected four RBI on the day.
The Hawks (0-1) will return to action this weekend (Feb. 28-March 1) when they travel to Nashville, Tenn., to take on Illinois Springfield and Tiffin (Ohio).
