Walk-off home run powers Hawks to 4-2 win over USI

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Sophomore center fielder Alex Hill hit a three-run walk-off home run to give Rockhurst a 4-2 victory over Southern Indiana in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at RU's Loyola Park. The Hawks dropped the second game, 3-1.

Hill hit her second home run of the season to dead center with one out in the bottom of the seventh right after Southern Indiana brought in a new pitcher. Gabbie Boerema singled and Liz Desloge was hit by a pitch to set up Hill's dramatic homer.

Lauren Cairo smashed her fifth homer of the season to cut USI's lead to 2-1 in the fourth. Boerema led the Hawks with two hits. Bridgette Sappington (5-5) allowed four hits and five walks while striking out eight over seven innings.

In the second game, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning. The Hawks scored an unearned run in the third. Southern Indiana tied the score in the sixth and hit two home runs in the seventh for the deciding margin. Hill collected two of Rockhurst's six hits. The game was delayed 30 minutes in the first inning when USI freshman shortstop Sadie Foster suffered a broken leg while making a putout at second base.

Rockhurst, 6-10 and 1-3 in the GLVC, will host Bellarmine in a noon doubleheader on Sunday. The Hawks will then play Northwest Missouri State in doubleheader at home on Wednesday.
