Ray Chang Video Highlights
For the second time since 2009, Ray Chang will play on a global stage for China in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. The former Rockhurst University baseball star infielder is the only player on Team China who is currently playing in a Major League Baseball system.
Chang, who played at Triple-A Rochester in the Minnesota Twins' system in 2012, recently signed a minor-league contract with the Cincinnati Reds. He will play third base for the Reds' Triple-A team, the Louisville Bats, after the World Baseball Classic ends.
Team China will be playing in Pool A in the 16-team World Baseball Classic, which runs from March 2-19. China opens against Japan on March 3 at the Japan Dome in Fukuoda, Japan. China also will play Cuba on March 4 and Brazil on March 5. Led by former Seattle Mariners manager John McLaren, China's coaching staff includes former MLB pitcher Bruce Hurst and ex-MLB manager Art Howe.
Chang powered China to its only win in the 2009 World Baseball Classic. In front of an ESPN audience, Chang batted 3-for-4 with a home run, double and two RBIs in a 4-1 win over Chinese Taipei in the Japan Dome.
In eight seasons in the minor leagues, Chang has a .272 career batting average with 22 home runs and 220 RBIs with a .972 fielding average. He started out with the San Diego Padres as a non-drafted free agent in 2005 and later played in the minor leagues for the Pirates and Red Sox.
Chang played shortstop for the Hawks from 2002-05. He was named to the NCAA Division II South Central All-Region first team and was voted the co-Player of the Year in the Heartland Conference in 2005. He batted .352 with seven home runs, 59 RBIs and 44 runs scored in his senior year. He graduated with a degree in international business.
