Blackbourn steps down as Rockhurst head coach

Kyle Blackbourn posted a 40-19 record in two seasons at Rockhurst
Rockhurst Athletics has announced today that Kyle Blackbourn is leaving his position as head men's basketball coach to pursue other opportunities.

In two seasons at Rockhurst, Blackbourn posted a 40-19 record and led the Hawks to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009. He also directed Rockhurst to its first Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season championship this season.

"I want to thank Coach Blackbourn for the impact he has made on our program," said RU Director of Athletics Kristy Bayer. "He has put Rockhurst on the map as a nationally-ranked program. I wish him and his family nothing but the best at their next stop.

"We will begin a national search immediately, and we are looking for the next candidate to continue this path of competitive success."

Blackbourn guided the Hawks to a 23-7 record this season and their first national ranking since 2002. He was named the 2026 GLVC Coach of the Year. The Hawks won their most conference games (17) in school history, their most regular season wins since 1980-81, and their longest winning streak (11) since 1962-63.

Rockhurst was ranked as high as No. 18 in the NABC Division II Top 25 Poll and finished 24th in the final regular season poll. The Hawks are ranked among the nation's top teams in scoring offense, scoring margin, fewest turnovers per game and free throw percentage.
