Hawks open new season with strong group of returners

Senior defender Tori Julien is the team captain
The Rockhurst women's lacrosse program opens the 2025 season Friday at home against Colorado Mesa with a solid number of key returners and an impressive group of newcomers.

Head coach Molly McCourt says she has a tight-knit group who love lacrosse and who want to get better every day. "We have a lot of great leadership and returners who know what it takes to win at this level, and we have some fresh faces who are excited to show what they can do."

The Hawks return the bulk of their defense, led by senior goalkeeper Mae Beins and senior defender and team captain Tori Julian. Junior Abby Gerstner and a pair of sophomores in Audra Yoder and Chony Garza saw a lot of playing time last year.

"Tori Julian has developed into the stalwart of our defense and she loves to compete," McCourt said. "Abby Gerstner has been a consistently solid one-on-one defender. Audra Yoder and Chony Garza bring a high-level understanding of the game and will make big impact."

The midfield play will be led by senior Page Yehling, junior Aubrie Smith, and sophomores Kaylee Lary and Ayana Bougie-Martinez. Yehling and Lary combined for 24 goals, 30 caused turnovers and 40 ground balls last season.

"Page Yehling is a do-it-all midfielder and leader. Aubrie Smith is relentless on both sides of the ball and looks forward to finally showing what she can do," McCourt said.

McCourt said a newcomer to watch is freshman midfielder Kylee Pickens, who was the high school All-Metro Girls Player of the Year in St. Louis last year. "She looks forward to show how her skills translate to our level," added McCourt.

Offensively, the Hawks return senior attacker Reagan Danner, who scored 28 goals and recorded six assists last year. Junior attacker Elise Magee, who played the last two years at Colorado State-Pueblo, will help lead the offense.

"Elise Magee brings a wealth of knowledge and is such an intuitive player. Reagan Danner is a slippery, elusive goal scorer," McCourt said.

The Hawks hope to improve on last year's 9-7 record and fourth-place finish in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. GLVC play begins on April 3 at home against William Jewell.
