Baseball opens 2024 season in Tennessee

Adonis Forte earned First Team All-GLVC honors last year
The Rockhurst baseball team opens the 2024 season this weekend in Millington, Tennessee with strong group of returnees and a solid recruiting class. The Hawks begin a three-game series at Christian Brothers University with a doubleheader on Friday at noon.

"We had a successful fall and look forward getting off to a strong start. We have a combination of new faces and established veterans," said Burns, who is going into his 31st season at Rockhurst.

The Hawks will be led offensively by junior outfielder Adonis Forte, who was the team leader in batting average (.377), hits (52), runs scored (30), stolen bases (18), on-base percentage (.473), and slugging percentage (.536) last year.

The other returning starters include junior first baseman Andrew Loeffelman, senior outfielder Cole Wagner, and sophomore infielders Peyton Clerk and Brandon Hebrank.

Loeffelman hit .354 with a team-high five home runs and 29 RBIs. Wagner batted .295 with 25 runs scored and 23 RBIs. Clerk and Hebrank combined to start 80 games in the infield in their freshman year.

Michael Laudando returns to Rockhurst for his junior year after playing at Southeast Missouri State in 2023. He will lead the pitching staff in addition to playing in the infield. In his first year at Rockhurst, Laudando posted a 7-5 record and 3.16 ERA on the mound while batting .361 in earning 2022 GLVC Freshman of the Year honors.

Joining Laudando in the rotation will be sophomore Landon Carr along with freshmen Jackson Dearing and Brendan Rodis. PJ Loucks, Jake Canent, Gavyn Dockery and Archer Nolen will carry the bullpen load.

Newcomers who will see action right away are junior outfielder Drew Cornelison, freshman infielder Dakota Hanna and freshman outfielder Matthew Brimacombe. Returnees Patrick Wind and Luke Feucht will handle the catching duties.

"We have a difficult conference schedule so we need to take advantage of our non-conference schedule," Burns said.

The Hawks will play 36 conference games this season with nine four-game series, culminating with a weekend series at home against William Jewell May 2-4. Quincy and Maryville were picked first and second in the GLVC Preseason Coaches Poll.
