Capra served Rockhurst in several roles over 32 years

Carl Capra, Jr., who spent 32 years at Rockhurst as a coach and administrator, died on Tuesday, Oct. 1, in Kansas City, Missouri. Capra coached men's and women's golf, women's soccer and men's basketball at Rockhurst. He also served as an assistant athletic director, compliance director, intramurals director and as a recruiter in the RU Admissions office.

Capra was the men's golf coach at Rockhurst for 20 years. Three of his golfers (Drew Hatten, Clarke Fry and Nick Arman) played in a total of eight NCAA Super Regionals. He also served as the women's golf coach from 1997-2012. His 1998 team qualified for 1998 NAIA women's national golf tournament.

The Rockhurst women's soccer program posted a 71-29-9 record under Capra from 1993-97. His last two teams were ranked eighth and fifth in the nation while competing as an NAIA member.

A graduate of Rockhurst College in 1970 with a B.A. in secondary education, Capra also held a master's degree in counseling from Central Missouri State University and a master's degree in athletic administration from the University of Kansas.

Capra, 76, is survived by his sons, Chris Drummond (Toni) and Jacob Capra, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Lucia Ornelas (Jose), Jerry Capra (Christine), and Liz Mease (JR), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.

To honor his memory, a service will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Kansas City, Missouri, on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. followed by Mass at 5:30 p.m. Private burial will be at a later date.
