Rockhurst announces 2024 Hall of Fame Class

The upcoming Hall of Fame class includes six former student-athletes, one former coach and one team.
Rockhurst Athletics has announced a group of seven outstanding individuals and one team into its 2024 Athletics Hall of Fame Class.

The upcoming Hall of Fame class includes six former student-athletes, one former coach and one team. The inductees include: Kara (Brown) Franke, women's volleyball; Rich Grawer, baseball and men's basketball; Mark Magee, men's soccer; Sarah Miller-Sell, women's basketball; Jim Sarcone, Jr., baseball; Galen Struve, softball coach; Mike Tucker, men's soccer; and the 1992-93 women's basketball team.

The 2024 Hall of Fame inductees highlight various generations of student-athletes, coaches and teams across multiple sports at Rockhurst University.

"We are thrilled to announce this year's Hall of Fame class," said RU Director of Athletics Kristy Bayer. "This group joins an elite group of Hawk inductees. As always, we are excited to honor and celebrate these athletes for their hard work and success while they were here at Rockhurst.

"As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of women's athletics this year on campus, we are looking forward to honoring our first female athletic team to ever be inducted into our Hall of Fame."

The Class of 2024 will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024 in an evening ceremony taking place in the Arrupe Hall Auditorium on the campus of Rockhurst University. Tickets will be available for purchase starting Nov. 6, 2023.

KARA (BROWN) FRANKE, '02 – Women's Volleyball (1998-01)
(Brown) Franke is one of greatest setters in school history. She holds the school record for career assists (6,560) and ranks sixth in career digs (1,587). Brown earned All-Heartland Conference honors in 2001 and was named to the 1998 NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team. She helped Rockhurst post a 155-12 record over four seasons and played in two NCAA national tournaments.

RICH GRAWER, '65 – Men's Basketball/Baseball (1961-65)
Grawer was a four-year starting shortstop for the Hawks. A team captain in 1965, he broke numerous school hitting records as he batted .490 in 1964 and .391 in 1965. Grawer played on Rockhurst's 1964 NAIA national championship basketball team. He went on to have a successful basketball coaching career at DeSmet Jesuit High School and Saint Louis University.

MARK MAGEE, '14 – Men's Soccer (2010-13)
Magee led the Hawks to three NCAA men's soccer national tournaments while earning All-American and All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors three times. In 2012, Magee was named the GLVC Offensive Player of the Year and the Midwest Region Player of the Year. The Evesham, England native finished his career with 132 points on 51 goals and 30 assists.

SARAH MILLER-SELL, '00 – Women's Basketball (1997-98)
Miller-Sell led Rockhurst to 24 wins and a second-round finish in the NAIA national tournament in 1997-98. She earned NAIA All-American honors while averaging 21.2 points per game and broke an NAIA record with 146 three-point field goals made in 1997-98. Miller-Sell scored 42 points while making an NAIA-record 13 three-point field goals against William Woods in 1998.

JIM SARCONE, JR. '66 – Baseball (1963-66)
Sarcone, Jr. was an outstanding four-year pitcher for the Hawks. He graduated with a school record for lowest career ERA at 2.91. In his junior year, he set the school record for lowest ERA in a season at 1.99. Sarcone, Jr. won four games in his senior year, including throwing a one-hitter against Pittsburg State and a shutout win over Maryville with 11 strikeouts.

COACH GALEN STRUVE – Softball (2005-17)
Struve guided the Rockhurst softball program from its inception in 2005 until his retirement after the 2017 season. The Hawks won 265 games and advanced to the GLVC Tournament five times under Struve. Seven of his teams received the NCAA D2 Top 10 Team Academic Award from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Rockhurst broke a school record for wins (31) and conference wins (19) in 2017 while winning the GLVC regular season title. Struve passed away in December of 2022.

MIKE TUCKER, '69 – Men's Soccer (1965-67)
Tucker was a center back defender who played an instrumental role in helping Rockhurst advance to the NAIA national tournament in 1967 while earning All-Tournament honors. He was selected to the MO-KAN All-Conference Team in 1966 and '67. Tucker was named to the NAIA All-Area Team in 1965. He played on the Kansas City Spurs' NASL championship team in 1969.

1992-93 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM
Under the direction of head coach Tracy Rietzke, the 1992-93 women's basketball team posted a 30-2 record and played in the NAIA national tournament. Their roster included two current RU Hall of Fame members, Andrea Tinsley,' 93 and Cindy (Cernech) Hamilton, '94. Their complete roster includes: Robin Baker; Carol Boardman; Christi (Budke) Rippy, '93;, '93; Cindy (Cernech) Hamilton; Amy (Eck) Gansner, '94; Megan (Kampschroeder) Laurent, '96; Nicole LaPointe, '93; Keri Laufenberg; Bridget (O'Reilly) Cantrell, '94; Tracey (Ruggles) Bradshaw, '96; Julie (Sapp) Mooney, '95; Maddie (Sorenson) Dyson, '97 †; Andrea Tinsley; Samara Wenger, '94; Christa (West) Perry, '94, Jennifer (Wichmann) Franke, '96; Doug Nelson (assistant coach); Maryann Mitts (assistant coach); Chris Miskec (assistant coach); and Tracy Rietzke (head coach).
