Women open new season with high hopes

Logan Derosia has scored 101 goals at Rockhurst.
The Rockhurst women's lacrosse team opens the 2021 season today with an experienced group of offensive and defensive returnees from last season.

Head coach Molly McCourt returns eight starters, including three All-Conference players in Mackenzie Blair, Madison Cook and Sydney Shindler.

"I think we are more well-rounded and our defense is solid," McCourt said. "I think we are peaking at the right time. We are excited to play a tough schedule. We play four games against Top 10 teams. We want to play the toughest competition."

Rockhurst hosts No. 1-ranked Lindenwood in its season opener today at 4 p.m. The Hawks will play Lindenwood a second time at home in April and will also face preseason Top 10 teams on the road in Indianapolis and Regis.

On defense, the Hawks will be led by Cook, Nia Callion, Katelyn Kochanowski and Audrey Titzer. Cook earned All-GLVC honors last year while causing 21 turnovers.

The goalie position is in safe hands with the return of Shindler and Madeline Morrison. The duo combined for five wins and 110 saves last year.

Blair has been moved from defense to the midfield after earning second team All-GLVC honors in 2021 while posting 37 ground balls, 36 draw controls and 24 caused turnovers.

Addison Bradley, Christine Corbin and Carolyn Byrd return in the midfield. McCourt is expecting two freshmen to make an impact in the midfield in Page Yehling and Reagan Danner.

The Hawks will be led on offense with experienced attackers in Logan Derosia, Dani Mabry, Helen Krause and Jaeden Waschbusch. Those four combined for 64 goals and 28 assists last season.

Derosia, who missed eight games with an injury last year, has scored 101 goals over the past three seasons. Krause and Mabry have combined for 132 career points.
