Hawks tip off season with exhibition game at Rice

The Hawks open the regular season on November 11.
Rockhurst will tip off the 2022-23 men's basketball season with an exhibition game at Rice University tonight at 7 p.m.

The Hawks return eight lettermen, including three starters, and welcome seven newcomers. Junior guard Jake Auer scored 12.4 points per game. Redshirt junior forward Rich Byhre averaged 11.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

Rice brings back its three of its top four scorers and four of its top six rebounders from last year. The Owls posted a 16-17 record last year and advanced to postseason play in the College Basketball Invitational.

"Rice presents a lot of challenges for us from a size standpoint. They have a big man that led them in assist last year which makes him extremely unique. They use him as a passer in playmaker at the top of the key," said RU coach Drew Diener. "They also have some good guards who got injured later in the year that can play, so stopping them is going to take maximum effort."

The Hawks' 2022-23 schedule features 20 conference games and eight non-conference games. Rockhurst will host 10 Great Lakes Valley Conference games and four non-conference contests.

Rockhurst will open the regular season with a pair of games in the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge in Hammond, Indiana. The Hawks meet Purdue Northwest at 7 p.m. on November 11, followed on November 12 at 1 p.m. against Davenport.

GLVC play begins November 28 when Rockhurst hosts Maryville. The Hawks will close out their non-conference schedule at home against William Woods on December 30.
