Hawks hold off late Maryville rally to post 61-60 win

Nick Volz led the Hawks with 16 points and six rebounds.

Maxim Romanov scored eight of the Hawks' final 12 points, including sinking a tie-breaking free throw with one second left, to lead Rockhurst to a 61-60 victory over Maryville Thursday night in St. Louis.

Romanov was fouled underneath the basket after he received a pass from Nick Volz. The junior guard made his first free throw. Romanov missed the second foul shot and the Saints got the rebound with 0.7 seconds left. Maryville got off a half-court shot after the buzzer sounded.

Maryville went on a 10-0 run over the final three-plus minutes to tie the score at 60-all. The Hawks turned the ball over four times in the final 2:35. The Saints tied the score on a 3-pointer by Ari Jackson with 29 seconds left.
 
"We didn't play well offensively in the first half, but our defense kept us in," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener.
 
"Their press gave us trouble late, but we made a gutsy play late to finish the deal. Great road victory for us."
 
Rockhurst shot 41.5 percent from the field (22 of 53). The Hawks made 15-of-29 field goals in the second half (51.7 percent).

Nick Volz led the Hawks with 16 points and six rebounds. The senior forward connected on seven-of-14 field goals.

Romanov finished with 14 points, three assists and three steals in his second game at Rockhurst. Sophomore guard Jake Auer collected 13 points and three steals. Junior guard Jihad Thornton tallied 12 points, three assists and four steals.

Maryville (9-7, 3-5 GLVC) shot 39.6 percent from the field (21 of 53). Kelvin Swims led the Saints with 14 points and six assists.
