The Rockhurst University Athletics Department mourns the passing of Pat Caldwell, one of the most accomplished players in the history of the men's basketball program. Caldwell, who helped lead the Hawks to the 1964 NAIA National Championship and remains the school's all-time leader in points and rebounds, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the age of 82 in his house in Florida.

A cornerstone of one of the most successful eras in Rockhurst men's basketball history, Caldwell played a pivotal role in establishing the Hawks as a national powerhouse during the 1960s. The 6-foot-6 center helped guide Rockhurst to two NAIA National Tournament appearances, highlighted by the program's historic national championship victory in 1964 in Kansas City.

More than six decades after his playing career, Caldwell's name remains at the top of the Rockhurst record books. He holds the program's all-time records for career points (2,334) and rebounds (1,113), cementing his legacy as one of the greatest players ever to wear a Hawks uniform.

Caldwell's remarkable career reached its peak during the 1965-66 season, when he earned First Team NAIA All-American honors. He scored a school-record 788 points and made 324 field goals that season, both single-season records that showcased his dominance on the court. Caldwell also helped lead Rockhurst back to the NAIA National Tournament, where the Hawks advanced to the quarterfinals.

As a junior in 1964-65, Caldwell averaged 23.3 points per game and earned Second Team All-American recognition, further establishing himself among the nation's top collegiate players.

His journey to becoming one of Rockhurst's all-time greats was not without adversity. After missing his sophomore season due to a herniated disc, Caldwell returned to the court and played an instrumental role in the Hawks' 1964 national championship run. He scored 545 points that season, earned NAIA All-Tournament Second Team honors and was selected to the 1964 NAIA Olympic Trials Team.

Caldwell's impact extended to the national stage, where he averaged 23.0 points per game and helped Rockhurst compile a 7-1 record across his two NAIA National Tournament appearances.

Beyond the records, championships and individual accolades, Caldwell leaves behind a lasting legacy as a central figure in the golden era of Rockhurst men's basketball. His contributions helped shape the program's history, and his accomplishments continue to serve as a standard of excellence for generations of Hawks.

Rockhurst Athletics extends its deepest condolences to Caldwell's family, friends, former teammates and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
