Box Score The Rockhurst women's tennis team fell to Newman, 4-3, in their season opener at Newman Saturday in Wichita, Kansas.

Newman captured a point in doubles with wins in No. 2 and 3 doubles. Rockhurst's Sam Czarnecki and Kate Merrick won in No. 1 doubles by a 6-4 score over Newman's Vlada Litvinova and Liza Gerasimova.

RU's Paula Romero and Andrea Dabbah fell in No. 2 doubles to Emily Young and Isabela Campos Bifano, 6-4. Sara Flaxbeard and Mary Grace Harris lost to Newman's Mariella D'Angelo Calvalcanti and Mariana Gaviria in No. 3 doubles, 6-0.

The Hawks and Jets split the six singles matches. Romero was a winner in No. 3 singles, defeating Campos Bifano (6-4, 6-1). Merrick won No. 4 singles over Young (4-6, 6-3, 6-3). Flaxbeard defeated Gaviria in No. 6 singles (6-1, 7-5).

In No. 1 singles, Litvinova defeated Czarnecki in two sets (6-4, 7-6). Gerasimova swept Dudic in No. 2 singles (6-4, 7-5). Dabbah fell in two sets to Calvalcanti (6-2, 6-3) in No. 4 singles.

The Hawks (0-1) will be back in action Feb. 21 against Missouri Western at Milburn Country Club.
