Zuzanna Szmyd captured the Green Flight singles title to highlight the Rockhurst women's tennis team's performance at the Washburn Invitational on Sept. 18-19 at the Kossover Tennis Center.
Szmyd earned the Hawks' top finish of the weekend, defeating Washburn's Ruriha Miyawaki in a three-set Green Flight championship match. After dropping the opening set, Szmyd rallied to take the second before winning the deciding tiebreak for a 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 victory.
Rockhurst also had two players advance to flight semifinals. Ewangelina Penkevych reached the Blue Flight semifinals before falling to Washburn's Daniela Tijaro, 6-1, 6-3. Penkevych later battled Washburn's Riko Konno in an extra match, taking the second set before falling 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
El Andriantefihasina represented the Hawks in the Red Flight semifinals, where she fell to Washburn's Jasel Bailey, 7-5, 6-3. Anna Borovytska competed in the Green Flight quarterfinals, falling to Miyawaki, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
In doubles action, Andriantefihasina and Borovytska competed in the Red Flight quarterfinals, falling 6-3 to Washburn's Mariana Silva Balsa and Konno. Eleanor Coleman and Cameila Hadab dropped a close 6-4 consolation match, while Szmyd and Penkevych fell 6-3 in consolation play.
The Hawks finished the two-day tournament with Szmyd's Green Flight championship leading the way, along with semifinal appearances from Penkevych and Andriantefihasina.
