Hawks open 2020-21 season with experienced lineup

Curtis Lewis, left, and Quinton Curry earned All-GLVC honors last season.
One key area not lacking for the 2020-21 Rockhurst men's basketball team is experience. Coach Drew Diener returns his top six scorers, including two of the top scorers in school history.

Curtis Lewis and Quinton Curry will lead the Hawks' attack heading into Rockhurst's season opener at Southern Indiana on Friday, Nov. 27. The two seniors each surpassed 1,000 career points as juniors last year.

The 6-7 Curry led the Hawks in scoring (15.8 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 pg) while earning All-GLVC First Team honors last year. Lewis was named to the All-GLVC Second Team as the 5-11 point guard averaged 14.8 points and 2.9 assists per game.

"Our experience helps make up for a disjointed preseason with a lack of practice and continuity," Diener said. "The fact they have been together is a saving grace for us, and that we are not all freshmen trying to figure this out."

Senior guard Chris Hamil and junior forward Nick Volz also return after starting the past two seasons. Hamil averaged 14.4 points and was one of the top 3-point shooters in the GLVC. Volz ranked among the top rebounders (7.0 pg) in the conference while scoring 11.6 points per game.

Senior forward Lasse Gummerus and sophomore guard Thomas Faber both averaged over 21 minutes a game last year. The pair combined for 76 field goals from behind the 3-point line.

Diener is counting on improved outside shooting with the addition of four freshmen guards: Jake Buchanan, Aidan Clarey, Jake Auer and Nick Arensberg.

"Our freshmen are good catch-and-shoot 3-point shooters," Diener said. "They have had limited practice due to the pandemic. They not only will need to get their wind back, but mentally get to executing at a high level after such a long time off."

Sophomore Charlie Hoehne and freshman redshirt Rich Byhre add depth to the frontcourt. Reserve guards Charlton Offermans, Spencer Moes and Kevin Truong also return.

"We have to become better passers," Diener said. "I think it will help our shooting. We have been near the bottom of the league in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio. It will go hand-in-hand with our 3-point shooting and free-throw shooting."

Diener hopes to improve on last year's 16-13 record. The Hawks were picked second behind Drury in the West Division in the GLVC Coaches' Preseason Poll.

"We had moments where we felt like we could beat anyone and then we would go through lulls with our scoring. We would miss passes and make some poor decisions," Diener added.
