Hawks face important road game at William Jewell

Nick Volz ranks fourth in field goal percentage and 16th in rebounding in the GLVC.

The Rockhurst Hawks meet the William Jewell Cardinals in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Mabee Center in Liberty, Missouri.

Rockhurst (15-10, 9-6 GLVC) has won five consecutive games and has moved past Truman State into seventh place in the GLVC Point Rating System. The Hawks are only .01 point behind sixth-ranked Missouri-St. Louis.

Curtis Lewis ranks 14th in scoring (13.2 pg) and ninth in assists (3.7) in the GLVC. Chris Hamil stands 19th in scoring (13.2 pg) and sixth in 3-point field goals (2.6 pg) in the GLVC. Quinton Curry ranks 22nd in scoring (13.0 pg) and ninth in rebounding (6.0 pg). Nick Volz and Connor Evans both rank among the top 20 rebounders in the GLVC.

Lewis scored 21 of his game-high 28 points in the second half to help rally Rockhurst to a 75-69 victory at home over Truman State last Saturday. Volz scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds.

The Cardinals (11-16, 5-10 GLVC) lead the GLVC in scoring offense (87.9 pg). Jewell is led by senior guard Keith Hayes, who leads the GLVC in scoring (21.2 pg). Byron Harp ranks seventh in scoring (16.4) and Eysan Wiley is the top rebounder (7.5 pg) in the GLVC.

William Jewell head coach Larry Holley, who announced his retirement on Feb. 5, will be coaching his final home game on Saturday. Holley will be formally recognized for his 48-year coaching career at the conclusion of Saturday's game.

The Hawks won their last meeting with Jewell, 88-75, on Jan. 12, 2018 at Rockhurst. Jewell has won 15 of the last 21 meetings in the all-time series, including holding an 11-4 advantage over the Hawks since joining the GLVC in 2013.
