Hawks drop first game of Florida trip

Box Score Third-ranked Florida Southern jumped out to an early lead en route to a 19-7 victory over Rockhurst Thursday night in Lakeland, Florida. The Hawks tightened up defensively, holding the Mocs to five goals in the second half.

"Obviously our reason for traveling to Florida was to play one of the top-ranked teams in the country," said Rockhurst coach Molly McCourt. "It was a good opportunity to see where we need work so we can make those improvements in conference play. We feel good about the lessons we learned today and will continue to seek out high-caliber competition."

Clare Goessling led Rockhurst with four goals on six shots (all on goal). Marianna Anderson, Maddi Scheipeter and Hannah Miller each added goals for the Hawks.

Scheipeter tallied a team-high four draw controls. Spud Ring collected a team-high four ground balls, while Bunga Spencer, Ann Leiber and Molly Dunham each added three ground balls. Spencer, Miller and Leiber each caused two turnovers.

Dunham totaled 10 saves in 50 minutes in goal. Emily Duff recorded four saves in 10 minutes.

The Hawks are back in action Friday night at Saint Leo University (6:00 p.m. CT).
