Hawks post 79-68 exhibition victory at Benedictine

Quinton Curry led the Hawks with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Box Score Four players scored in double figures to lead Rockhurst to a 79-68 victory over Benedictine College in the Hawks' exhibition opener Monday night in Atchison, Kansas.

"We executed semi-okay for being the first game," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "It was great to be in this atmosphere early to prepare us for a high-energy, pressure game because it's hard to simulate it in practice."

Rockhurst jumped out to a 38-29 halftime lead and widened their lead to 17 points (52-35) with 12:53 left to play. The Hawks scored their last 10 points at the foul line to hold off a late Raven rally.

"I thought the second half we played much better," Diener added. "The first half, playing without Curtis (Lewis) in there, was new to us after he got into foul trouble. For the most part, I thought our guys were determined to get it into (Nick) Volz and (Quinton) Curry, which resulted in us getting the lead."

Curry led the Hawks with 16 points and eight rebounds. Chris Hamil posted 16 points and made three 3-pointers. Volz tallied 15 points and seven rebounds. Lewis added 14 points and three assists.

The Hawks shot 52.3 percent from the field (23 of 44) and 68.4 percent from the foul line (28 of 41). The Ravens shot 42 percent from the field and 76 percent on free throws. The two teams combined for 35 turnovers and 58 fouls. Curry and Walt Eckelkamp both fouled out.

The Hawks play their final exhibition game at Tulsa University Thursday night.
