Van Pelt powers Hawks to sweep over William Jewell

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Alex Van Pelt blasted a walk-off grand slam to give Rockhurst a 14-12 victory in Game Two over William Jewell to complete a doubleheader sweep Friday at RU's Loyola Park.

Van Pelt hit a 3-1 fastball well over the right-field fence with one out in the bottom of the seventh to rally the Hawks to their fourth consecutive victory. The junior first baseman added a three-run homer to left-center in the first as he finished with three hits and seven RBIs.

Tommy Kraus and Henry Weiler each drove in a run and finished with three hits. Jeremy Lufft added two hits, including a run-scoring double in the sixth. Weiler gave up two runs on two hits over 2.2 innings to get his first win of the season.

The Hawks won the first game, 13-8, behind a 19-hit attack. Rockhurst scored four runs in the third to take a 6-2 lead and added five runs in the sixth to go ahead 12-6.

Van Pelt, Kraus and Lufft each collected three hits and two RBIs. Van Pelt hit a solo home run to right in the fourth and a run-scoring double in the sixth. Lufft smashed a two-run homer to left in the sixth.

Weiler, Nic Mertes, Corbin Hare and Garrett McNally each tallied two hits. PJ Seufert allowed two runs on four hits over 4.0 innings to get his second win of the season.

The Hawks (11-21, 4-10 GLVC) close out the four-game series at William Jewell on Saturday.
