Hawks post 14 hits in 9-7 loss to Grand Valley State

Alex Van Pelt led the Hawks with four hits and three RBIs.

Box Score Rockhurst could not recover from an early deficit in falling to Grand Valley State 9-7 at the Sunshine State Spring Games Tuesday in Kissimmee, Florida.

The Lakers jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the seventh inning. The Hawks scored three runs in the seventh to cut Grand Valley's lead to one run.

Alex Van Pelt hit a two-run home run in the ninth to reduce Grand Valley's lead to two runs. Van Pelt also had an RBI double in the seventh.

The Hawks finished with 14 hits, including six extra-base hits. Van Pelt led the Hawks with four hits and three RBIs. Henry Weiler also posted four hits with a run-scoring single in the seventh.

Grant McNally and Nic Mertes each posted two hits. Michael Ruffolo added an RBI double in the second and Corbin Hare drove in two runs.

Tyler Crouse took the loss as he allowed five runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings. Brock Collins pitched 3.0 innings out of the bullpen, giving up four runs on seven hits.

The Hawks (2-5) have a day off on Wednesday before playing Northwood on Thursday in Florida.
