The Rockhurst Hawks (4-3) will meet the Benedictine Ravens (9-2) for the first time since Nov. 9, 2010 when Hawks defeated the Ravens, 63-58, in an exhibition game at Rockhurst. The Hawks and Ravens were long-time rivals in the NAIA from the 1930s until the late 1990s.
"This is a game that many alums have been asking for since I got to Kansas City. In my meetings with former players, I have learned how heated of a rivalry this was and the passion behind both of the fan bases," said Rockhurst coach
Drew Diener. "It should make for a great atmosphere and experience for our players and those in attendance. I hope it will be the start of more games between our schools in the future."
Sophomore forward
Quinton Curry leads the Hawks in scoring (14.7 pg) and rebounding (5.9 pg). Curry ranks 16th in scoring, 13th in rebounding and sixth in field goal percentage (63.5) in the GLVC. Sophomore guard
Chris Hamil stands 26th in scoring (13.3 pg), ninth in 3-point field goals (2.43 pg) and 11th in steals (1.57 pg).
Curtis Lewis ranks fifth in assists (5.0 pg), 10th in free throw percentage (83.3) and 29th in scoring (12.7 pg) in the GLVC. Freshman forward
Nick Volz is third in field goal percentage (70.0) in the GLVC.
Lewis guided Rockhurst to a 72-56 conference road win last Saturday at Quincy, posting 24 points, nine assists and eight rebounds Saturday. Curry finished with 14 points (on seven-of-nine shooting) and five rebounds. Volz came off the bench to tally nine points and five rebounds. Hamil added eight points and six rebounds.
Tyler Garrett grabbed nine rebounds in his first start of the season.
"In watching film, I can see why Coach (Ryan) Moody's team is off to such a strong start. They are skilled and smart. That is a good combination. They will be a tough opponent for our team in, hopefully, an electric environment," added Diener.
Benedictine connected on a season-high 17 3-pointers last Saturday en route to an 88-52 win over Clarke. The Ravens finished with a 54.4 percent shooting effort while converting 48.6 percent from beyond the arc with a 64.3 effort at the free-throw line. Senior guard Thomas O'Connor scored a game-high 21 points with five 3-pointers. Freshman forward Eric Krus scored 14 points with four 3-pointers while sophomore guard Jaiden Bristol added 12 points off four 3-pointers. O'Connor leads the Ravens with a 13.8 scoring average. Kutney is averaging 12.5 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds per game.
