Box Score William Jewell withstood a late Rockhurst rally to escape with a 76-72 victory over the Hawks Thursday night at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.
Rockhurst went on a 10-2 run over the final three minutes to pull within two points at 74-72 with 52 seconds left. RU's Auston Rushing missed a go-ahead 3-pointer with five seconds left. Jewell got the rebound and made two insurance free throws with two seconds left.
"We battled all night long. I was proud of our mindset," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We played a great second half. We can play better and will. We have high character."
The Hawks jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the first six minutes. Jewell scored 18 unanswered points to take a 23-14 lead. The Cardinals led 34-25 at halftime and grabbed a 15-point lead, 41-26, early in the second half.
Curtis Lewis led the Hawks with 21 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals. Eddie Muench scored 16 points behind four-of-nine 3-pointers. Rushing added 14 points off the bench. Quinton Curry posted 11 points and 16 rebounds.
Rockhurst shot 39.4 percent from the field (26 of 66) and 35.5 percent from behind the 3-point line (11 of 31). Jewell made 27 of 61 field goals (44.3 percent) and eight of 26 3-pointers (30.8 percent).
The Hawks (8-5, 2-2 GLVC) host Indianapolis on Saturday.
