William Jewell held Rockhurst to two field goals over the final nine minutes of the first half in breaking away for an 80-65 victory over the Hawks Thursday night at the Mabee Center in Liberty, Missouri.

The Cardinals went on an 18-3 run in the first half to go from six down (23-17) to nine up (35-26) late in the first half. Jewell added an 11-0 run over four minutes in the second half to take a 53-39 lead with 12:24 left in the game.

"We really struggled offensively," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "Although we didn't turn it over, we never strung many good possessions together. That puts a lot of pressure on our defense. That's a great offensive team, we couldn't keep up with their scoring tonight."

Rockhurst shot 35.9 percent from the field (23 of 64) and 25.0 percent from behind the 3-point line (nine of 36). Jewell made 26 of 56 field goals (46.4 percent) and 13 of 27 3-pointers (48.1 percent).

Curtis Lewis led the Hawks with a season-high 27 points (on 11-of-18 shooting), five rebounds and five assists. Alex Hagan collected 10 points and 11 rebounds. Eddie Muench posted nine points on three 3-point baskets. Connor Evans added seven points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The Hawks (8-7, 2-4 GLVC) host Truman State on Saturday.
