Box Score For the second time in eight days, Rockhurst suffered a road loss on a last-second shot. William Jewell's Patrick Whelan made a layup with one second left to rally the Cardinals to an 84-80 victory over the Hawks Thursday night in Liberty, Mo.
Rockhurst (14-12, 8-10 GLVC) will play at Drury in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Hawks took an 80-78 lead on a jumper by Kaleb Warner with 45 seconds left. Whelan made a layup for Jewell to knot the score with 30 seconds left. Warner turned the ball over with 5.8 seconds left. Whelan then took the inbounds pass past midcourt and drove the floor for his game-winning shot. He added two free throws with 0.2 seconds left after Rockhurst turned the ball over.
"It's all about resiliency right now," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "How tough are we? No one in this league feels sorry for us. Are we elite competitors? That's what this conference tournament is about."
Alex Hagan led the Hawks with 19 points on seven-of-12 shooting. Warner scored 15 points on six-of-11 shooting. Mason Loewen posted 14 points and six rebounds. Malachi Nix collected 13 points and four assists.
Rockhurst shot 51.0 percent (26 of 51) from the field. William Jewell (9-17, 5-13 GLVC) connected on 27-of-57 field goals (47.4 percent). Matt Lassen led the Cardinals with 23 points and four assists.
