Box Score Rockhurst scored 13 unanswered points down the stretch to pull away for a 64-54 victory over 22nd-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside Thursday night at Mason-Halpin Field House.
The win was Rockhurst's first victory over a ranked opponent since January of 2010 when the Hawks upset second-ranked Bellarmine at Mason-Halpin.
The Hawks (13-7, 7-5 GLVC) rallied from a 37-28 halftime deficit to take the lead for the first time in the second half with 9:51 left to play. With the score tied at 46, Rockhurst held Parkside scoreless for over the next eight minutes in jumping out to a 59-46 lead with 1:36 left.
"I am proud of our resiliency in the second half,"Â said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "In the first half we really didn't have much rhythm on the offensive end and I think they carried over to the defensive end."
Connor Evans and Mason Loewen combined for 20 points and 11 rebounds in the second half. Loewen scored eight points in the final six points.
"In the second half, Connor and Mason were able to attack the rim and get to playing inside out again," Diener added. "This is a great win for our program as Wisconsin-Parkside has a great program."
Malachi Nix led the Hawks with 14 points and six assists. Loewen tallied 14 points on four-of-five shooting. Evans finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Alex Hagan added eight points and six rebounds.
Rockhurst shot 40.4 percent from the field (21 of 52) and 63.3 percent at the foul line (19 of 30). Parkside (17-4, 9-3 GLVC) made 18-of-60 field goals (30.0 percent) and 13-of-22 free throws (59.1 percent).
The Hawks host Lewis on Saturday (Feb. 4).
