Box Score Alex Hagan collected 20 points and 14 rebounds to power Rockhurst to a 73-59 victory over Missouri Western Tuesday night at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.
Hagan scored 14 points in the second half as the Hawks outscored the Griffons 42-29 in the final 20 minutes. In a two-minute span, the senior forward hit two three-pointers and a pair of free throws to give Rockhurst a 52-43 lead with 10:29 left in the game.
The Hawks connected on 14 of 22 field goals (63.6 percent) in the second half while holding the Griffons to nine of 33 shooting (27.3 percent) after halftime.
"I was happy with the way we gutted this one out," said RU coach Drew Diener. "We didn't shoot the ball well in the first half, but I thought our defense was consistent all night long. Once again Alex was outstanding on the glass. His energy to rebound is really impressive."
Quinton Curry posted 12 points on six-of-seven shooting while grabbing seven rebounds. Curtis Lewis scored 12 points on four-of-10 shooting. Auston Rushing added 10 points and four rebounds. Connor Evans had an impressive line with nine points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Rockhurst hit 49.0 percent on its field goals (25 of 51) and 65.2 percent from the foul line (15 of 23). Western made 18 of 54 field goals (33.3 percent) and 15 of 21 free throws (71.4 percent).
The Hawks (3-1) play Central Missouri on Friday in Emporia, Kansas.
