Saint Louis pulls away from Hawks in second half

Auston Rushing led the Hawks with 15 points.

Saint Louis pulled away from Rockhurst over the final 12 minutes to post a 74-50 victory over the Hawks Monday night at SLU's Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis.

The win counts as a regular season game on SLU's record, but it was an exhibition game for the Hawks.

Rockhurst only trailed 41-36 with 12 minutes left in the game. The Billikens proceeded to go a 15-5 run over the next six-plus minutes to take a 61-41 lead.

The Hawks battled back from a 17-3 deficit in the first half to cut the Billikens' lead to 29-26 at halftime. The Hawks hit seven 3-pointers over the final 12 minutes of the first half.

"I thought we had our best game of the season," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "Defensively, we competed on every possession. We made a lot of progress on the offensive end from our previous loss. Our guys made a great improvement over the course of two days of film and practice."

Auston Rushing led the Hawks with 15 points while hitting five-of-seven 3-point shots. Curtis Lewis scored 13 points behind three 3-pointers. Eddie Muench added 12 points on four-of-10 3-point field goals. Alex Hagan added six points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Saint Louis hit 56.8 percent on its field goals (25 of 44) and 42.9 percent from beyond the 3-point line (six of 14). The Hawks made 17 of 53 field goals (32.1 percent) and 12 of 31 3-pointers (38.7 percent).

The Hawks (1-1) return home to host Washburn on Saturday afternoon.
