Box Score 2 William Jewell scored four runs in the seventh inning to rally for an 8-6 victory over Rockhurst in the first game of a conference doubleheader Saturday at Talley Stadium in Liberty, Missouri. The Cardinals won the second game, 9-5.
Rockhurst came within two outs of winning the opener. Jewell scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly and took the lead with a two-run triple. The Hawks grabbed a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout by
Tim Mahoney and a run-scoring single by
David Stober.
Thomas Cargile (1-1) took the loss in relief of starter
Michael Lydon-Lorson, who allowed six runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings. Stober led the Hawks with two hits and two RBIs.
Brandon Mikulka collected two hits and
Brett Marr drove in two runs with a single in the third.
In the second game, Jewell scored four runs in the second and five in the sixth to take a 9-3 lead. The Cardinals outhit the Hawks, 13-10.
Seth Soto paced the Hawks with two hits and an RBI single.
Mitch Stickney also had two hits. Mikulka doubled home two runs in the first.
Jake Goessling (0-1) allowed four runs on six hits in 1.1 innings.
The Hawks (10-15, 1-3 GLVC) host Maryville in their home opener on Saturday (April 2).
