Rockhurst men face challenge at Lewis

Josh Roberts scored a season-high 14 points at Missouri-St. Louis on January 30.
The Rockhurst Hawks (10-9, 5-6 GLVC) travel north to meet the Lewis Flyers (15-6, 7-4) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference inter-divisional matchup at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (February 4) in Romeoville, Illinois.

The Flyers won their last meeting, 85-65, last season at Rockhurst. The Flyers lead the all-time series, 9-5.

"Lewis has a lot of offensive firepower," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "(Max) Strus is a stud player. He has great size and scores in a lot of ways. In addition, they have talented scorers around him. They rebound well too. We need to take care of the ball. We have turned it over too often recently."
Senior forward Dominique Washington leads the Hawks with a 19.1 scoring average. Junior guard Malachi Nix stands first in assists (5.95), ninth in steals (1.6), seventh in assist/turnover ratio and seventh in minutes played (32.9) in the GLVC. Freshman guard Austin LeVan ranks 28th in scoring (12.2) and sixth in 3-point field goals made (2.4) in the GLVC. Sophomore forward Alex Hagan ranks ninth in rebounding (7.0) and third in offensive rebounds (2.5) in the GLVC. Junior forward Adam Fatkin stands third in field goal percentage (59.3) in the GLVC.

The Hawks rank second in scoring defense (70.3), second in 3-point field goal percentage defense (30.4), fifth in field goal percentage defense (43.3), sixth in turnover margin and sixth in rebounding margin in the GLVC.

Rockhurst could not recover from a 13-0 second-half run by Missouri-St. Louis in falling to the Tritons, 75-62, Saturday in St. Louis. The Hawks led 35-29 at halftime and jumped out to a 40-31 lead three minutes into the second half. UMSL closed out the game by making 17-of-21 free throws. Washington led the Hawks with 20 points and seven rebounds. Josh Roberts collected 14 points, four rebounds and two steals. John Burke tallied nine points and four rebounds.

Lewis is coming off a 87-79 victory at McKendree last Saturday. Sophomore forward Max Strus leads the GLVC in scoring (21.3) and rebounding (9.4). Freshman center Frank Vukaj is the conference leader in blocked shots (1.6).
