Box Score Rockhurst rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half to edge Newman, 69-66, Saturday at Mason-Halpin Field House.
The Hawks (3-2) went on a 10-0 run, capped by a layup from Connor Evans, to tie the score at 53-53 with 9:53 left to play. Rockhurst closed the game on a 12-4 run to win its third home game of the season. A layup by Evans at the 1:13 mark and two free throws by John Burton with seven seconds left secured the win for the Hawks.
"We need to become a better rebounding team. That has killed us,"Â said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener, whose Hawks' small lineup was outrebounded 47-28. "I thought John Burton, Will Kathrein and Will Hrubes gave us good minutes off the bench. We found a way to win so we are happy."
Malachi Nix led the Hawks with 20 points, five rebounds and three steals. Evans posted 14 points, four rebounds and four steals. Mason Loewen tallied 12 points and six rebounds. Undra Wilson added 11 points off the bench.
Rockhurst shot 39.2 percent from the field (20 of 51) and 77.4 percent on free throws (24 of 31). Newman finished with a 37.1 field goal percentage (23 of 62).
