Box Score Rockhurst jumped out to a 22-point halftime lead over Emporia State and held off the Hornets down the stretch to post an 81-78 victory Wednesday night at Mason-Halpin Field House.
Freshman Undra Wilson made a layup with 35 seconds left and Alex Hagan hit two free throws nine seconds later to secure the Hawks' second win of the season.
Rockhurst shot 50.0 percent from the field (28 of 55) and 41.7 percent on three-point shots (10 of 24). The Hawks connected on 59.4 percent of their field goals (19 of 32) in the first half. Travis House made five of the Hawks' eight 3-point field goals in the first 20 minutes to help give Rockhurst a 50-28 halftime lead.
"This was a tale of two halves," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "The first half went about as good as it could have gone. We guarded great and shot the heck out of it. Our mentality changed for the second half, and they took advantage of it. Our guys made gutsy plays late; we showed good toughness late."
Hagan led the Hawks with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Hagan made six-of-nine field goals, including canning all three of his three-point shots. House came off the bench to score 17 points. Mason Loewen scored 16 points. Malachi Nix finished with 11 points and three steals. Wilson added six points and four assists.
The Hawks (2-0) play at Washburn on Saturday (Nov. 19).
