Rockhurst men meet Saints in St. Louis

The Rockhurst Hawks (9-8, 4-5 GLVC) meet the Maryville Saints (7-11, 1-8 GLVC) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division matchup at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (January 28) in St. Louis. The Hawks won their last meeting, 86-75, at Rockhurst on Jan. 31, 2015. Rockhurst leads the all-time series, 7-3

"We need to get back to really defending people," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We have been trending the wrong way with our defense. This team, again, has two great scorers on the perimeter that are tough to stop. Maryville does a great job of giving them space to operate and playing with each other."

Senior forward Dominique Washington leads the Hawks with a 19.3 scoring average. Freshman guard Austin LeVan ranks 27th in scoring (12.4), fifth in 3-point field goals made (2.5) and second in free throw percentage (91.9) in the GLVC. Junior guard Malachi Nix stands 23rd in scoring (12.9), first in assists (5.65), ninth in steals (1.5), 10th in assist/turnover ration and seventh in minutes played (33.0) in the GLVC. Sophomore forward Alex Hagan ranks second in field goal percentage (59.2) and ninth in rebounding (7.0) in the GLVC. Junior forward Adam Fatkin stands 11th in field goal percentage  (56.1) in the GLVC.

The Hawks rank second in scoring defense (70.7), third in 3-point field goal percentage defense (30.9), fifth in field goal percentage defense (43.1), fifth in turnover margin and fifth in rebounding margin in the GLVC.

Rockhurst suffered a 73-62 loss at home to Missouri S&T last Saturday. Josh Roberts led the Hawks with 16 points on seven-of-17 shooting. Washington collected 15 points on six-of-eight shooting. Hagan posted a game-high 12 rebounds. Nix finished with eight points, four rebounds and six assists.

The Saints are coming off an 81-67 loss at Truman State last Saturday. Sophomore guard Forrester Sims led Maryville with 19 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Sophomore forward Marvin Grant-Clark (15.5, 10th in GLVC) and Sims (14.9, 12th in GLVC) lead the Saints in scoring. Freshman forward Karson King is the team leader in rebounding (5.4, 17th in GLVC).
