Box Score Malachi Nix scored eight points in overtime to lift Rockhurst to an 86-80 victory over McKendree Saturday in Lebanon, Illinois.
A jumper by Nix gave the Hawks an 80-74 lead with 46 seconds left in the extra period. Nix added four free throws in the final 15 seconds to give Rockhurst its second road win in two days.
McKendree went on a 10-0 run to take a 65-60 lead with 4:17 left in the second half. The Hawks rallied to take a 68-67 lead with 52 seconds left. The Bearcats tied the game at 70-all on a free throw with 14 seconds left.
"We kept our poise during their late run which enabled us to grind this game out. That is a trait of a winning program," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener.
Dominique Washington led the Hawks with 25 points (four in overtime) and 11 rebounds. Washington connected on 10-of-22 field goals. Nix finished 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Austin LeVan scored 14 points. Alex Hagan posted 12 points and nine rebounds.
"Outside of Dominique's performance inside, we didn't ever have great rhythm offensively. They really spread us out and attacked on the other end. They have some nice playmakers," Diener added.
Rockhurst shot 44.4 percent from the field (32 of 72) and 72.7 percent from the foul line (16-of-22). McKendree made 27-of-66 field goals (40.9 percent) and 17-of-21 free throws (81.0 percent). Nate Michael paced the Bearcats with 26 points.
The Hawks, 8-6 and 3-3 in the GLVC, play at William Jewell on Monday (January 18).
