Rockhurst takes momentum into McKendree

Malachi Nix is the GLVC leader in assists.
The Rockhurst Hawks (7-6, 2-3 GLVC) meet the McKendree Bearcats (8-5, 1-4 GLVC) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference inter-divisional matchup at 3 p.m. Saturday in Lebanon, Illnois. The Bearcats won their last meeting, 84-78, at McKendree on Feb. 12, 2015. The all-time series is tied at 1-1.

"Similar to Springfield, McKendree has several perimeter threats." said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "Defending the three-point shot will be crucial. We also have to be better about guarding without fouling. We can be much better on that department."

Senior forward Dominique Washington leads the Hawks with an 18.3 scoring average. Freshman guard Austin LeVan ranks 20th in scoring (13.7), tied for third in 3-point field goals made (2.8) and third in free throw percentage (90.9) in the GLVC. Junior guard Malachi Nix stands 21st in scoring (13.3), first in assists (5.9) and seventh in steals (1.85) in the GLVC.

Sophomore forward Alex Hagan ranks fourth in field goal percentage (62.3) and 15th in rebounding (6.0) in the GLVC. Junior forward Adam Fatkin stands 11th in field goal percentage  (56.0) in the GLVC. The Hawks lead the GLVC in 3-point field goal percentage defense (28.8), and rank second in scoring defense (69.5), third in field goal percentage defense (41.5) and fifth in rebounding margin (plus 3.4).

Hagan scored five points in the final two minutes to lead Rockhurst to a 78-68 victory at Illinois Springfield Thursday night. Washington led the Hawks with 19 points and eight rebounds. Nix posted 13 points, four rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Hagan finished with nine points and nine rebounds. Josh Roberts came off the bench to score 13 points while hitting three 3-point shots. Joshua Brannon added nine points and five rebounds in a reserve role.
